Odoo 20: what's new – and what of it really affects an SME?

Odoo 20 has been available since 24 September 2026. The headline is the same everywhere: AI. For a company with 10 to 50 employees, however, the decisive changes are quieter. We put into context what is new, what costs extra, what changes structurally – and what it means if you are working on Odoo 15 to 19 today.

All statements about features are based on Odoo's official release notes. Where Odoo mentions limitations, we mention them too. This article is not a feature list – Odoo provides that itself, several hundred lines long.

AI agents, MCP and credits

AI in Odoo 20: from assistant to clerk

In Odoo 19, the AI mainly summarised and answered. In Odoo 20, AI agents may create and modify records and run as part of automated and scheduled actions.

The example from Odoo's own video: an order arrives by email, the agent creates the sales order, sends the customer a confirmation and flags the order for review. It is set up with an instruction in plain language; the agent explains beforehand what it will do.

What the release notes include:

  • Agents in automations: agents are called by automated and scheduled actions. In the automation chat you can see how an agent acted and request changes based on its mistakes.
  • Records from files: upload a file with instructions, for example as a PDF, and the agent creates the records or updates existing ones.
  • Voice input, clickable answers to the agent's follow-up questions and permission requests, live status messages.
  • Automatic model selection: you choose the AI provider, Odoo chooses the model for the task.
  • MCP connectivity: your database can be connected to external AI tools via the Model Context Protocol.
  • Website assistant: create or change pages, forms and menus by description, rewrite texts, improve SEO with AI.

The point no keynote says out loud: according to the release notes, all AI features require credits that are purchased as in-app purchases. The costs depend on how intensively you use the features. If you build processes on agents, estimate beforehand what that means per month.

Our take: an agent automates whatever you describe to it – good processes as well as bad ones. In a company where quote approval still runs on three shouted questions across the office, an agent only makes the chaos faster. Clarify the process first, then put the agent on it.

The quiet changes

The changes an SME notices day to day

Accounting: pay invoices from Odoo

Instead of exporting a payment file and uploading it in the banking portal: select invoices individually or in batches and pay them directly from Odoo with a single signature, via the new PISP interface (Payment Initiation Service Providers). Check which banks support this before you use it. On top of that: line suggestions for vendor bills based on invoice history, duplicate detection with two warning levels (already since 19.0), a payment assistant that prevents double payments, and a simplified dunning run.

Unchanged in Odoo 20: XRechnung, ZUGFeRD and Peppol. What applies from 2027 and how the setup works: E-invoicing with Odoo.

Four structural changes in accounting that affect upgrades: every entry that touches a bank account must now originate from a bank transaction. The separate “Employee expenses” menu is gone – approved expenses create draft bills in the expense journal. Account groups have been replaced by parent accounts, account codes are optional. And taxes are only allowed within their fiscal position: a default tax that doesn't belong to the invoice's fiscal position is removed – even without a replacement. If you have a well-maintained chart of accounts, you will hardly notice; if not, you will notice at the first month-end closing.

Payroll: simulation instead of surprises

Net-to-gross simulation (enter the target net, see the total cost), test payroll runs with printed payslips before approval, salary indexation as a flat amount or percentage. Important for existing setups: work entries and the Planning-to-Payroll integration have been removed, and work entry types have been merged with time off types. If you rely on them today, plan for this before the upgrade.

Field Service is no longer a separate module

Its features – travel time, scheduling, live map of the team – now live in the Planning app. For trades, service and maintenance, this changes the menu structure, not the functionality; training the team still belongs in the upgrade plan.

Offline mode

View, create and edit records without a connection, with synchronisation as soon as the network is back. For field service, warehouses and construction sites, perhaps the least spectacular and most useful new feature.

Purchasing and inventory

Suggested minimum and maximum stock levels for reordering rules based on consumption history, desired coverage and order frequency. Vendor rating based on the quality checks of their products. Allocation directly from the forecast report. Stock at a past date with a precise timestamp, stock ageing in the moves analysis, landed costs for individual products of a transfer, retroactive update of manufacturing costs. CMR consignment note pre-filled from the delivery. For groups of companies: intercompany routes and delivery from another company's warehouse.

Manufacturing

Continuous production (record quantities directly on the work order, the next blocked step is released without closing the whole manufacturing order), bill of materials comparison, Kanban planning for work centres and a Gantt view with buffers.

Sales, CRM and website

Quote faster, sell more cleanly

Quotations

Quotation sections can be saved and reused as templates, and any quotation can become a template. Margins can be edited directly in the line (the price recalculates), lines are numbered, product images appear in the quotation, and a toggle switches between prices with and without tax. For anyone who rebuilds quotations in Word today because Odoo “didn't look the way the customer expects”, this is the relevant part of this version.

Prices and commissions

Time-limited prices for specific periods or weekdays, pricing rules per packaging unit, single-use discount codes. Commissions are calculated on amounts actually paid, including manager commission.

CRM

Lead generation now uses the Dun-&-Bradstreet database instead of Clearbit. Rules for automatic lead assignment, a pipeline switcher between sales teams, and upsell and renewal quotations directly from the lead based on existing subscriptions.

Website and shop

The AI website assistant creates pages, forms and menus by description. For visibility in AI search: an llms.txt from the website settings, structured data in the HTML by default, sitemaps with indexable URLs only. Translatable URLs for static pages. In the shop: returns via the customer portal, preferred delivery date, minimum order quantities, price display incl. or excl. tax per pricelist – and selling without the Inventory app. Relevant for German shops: SOFORT is no longer supported as a payment method by any payment provider.

Point of sale and communication

Multiple currencies at one point of sale, service charges, multiple printers per point of sale, receipts via WhatsApp or SMS. In Discuss: polls, call recording with summary. In the Phone app: a call flow designer for incoming calls, call log directly in the chatter.

What this means for your upgrade

Upgrade, wait or rebuild?

First, the deadlines. Odoo gives every major version three years of standard support – helpdesk, bug fixes, security updates. After that, extended support is only available for an additional fee. According to Odoo's support table, standard support ends for Odoo 17 in September 2026, for Odoo 18 in September 2027 and for Odoo 19 in September 2028. Upgrades are only possible to supported versions.

Then the German topics. The release notes list localisation changes country by country – Germany is not among them. That doesn't mean nothing works, but that you should check e-invoicing, tax reports and bank formats on a test copy before you switch. The timing matters: from 1 January 2027, companies with more than €800,000 in prior-year revenue must send e-invoices in XRechnung or ZUGFeRD format, and from 2028 everyone must. Odoo has been able to do this for several versions – whether your setup does is a question of configuration.

Then the technology. Every custom and every third-party module has to be migrated and tested, and Odoo 20 brings changes that hit exactly there: access rights have been simplified, record rules have been removed. Font Awesome icons have been replaced by Material Symbols, which affects custom views and reports. Tracking values in the chatter are no longer stored. Asset models are now called depreciation models, account groups are parent accounts. The structural changes – bank entries, work entries, Field Service, expenses – are the real effort, not the new buttons.

And then the decision

Odoo Online

You will be migrated automatically. Afterwards, check processes, reports and access rights – or have them checked.

Odoo 18 or 19, few customisations

No need to rush. Run the upgrade on a test copy and choose a quiet moment.

Odoo 16 or 17

Plan now. Standard support for 17 has ended, and for 16 even earlier.

Odoo 14 or 15 with many customisations

Check whether a rebuild on Odoo 20 is cheaper and more stable than an upgrade across five versions.

Community Edition

No test upgrade via Odoo's platform. Analysis billed by effort, with a stop clause.

This is exactly the question answered by our Odoo Upgrade Check: Fixed price, written report, recommendation – and you decide.

Our assessment

Our opinion after the first days

Odoo 20 is the first version in which AI is part of the process rather than a chat window next to it. That is the right direction. Still: for most of the companies we work with, the gain from this version comes from the basics that have improved – quotations, stock, payments, dunning. Those are the things that cost time every day.

Three points we are currently passing on to customers:

  • AI credits are an ongoing cost item. If you plan with them, start with one or two clearly defined processes, not with “automate everything”.
  • The upgrade effort lies in the structural changes. Bank entries only via transactions, work entries gone, Field Service in Planning, expenses in accounting. These are not clicks, they are process decisions.
  • A version change is the best moment to clean up. Unused modules, dead customisations, access rights nobody understands anymore. If you take care of this during the upgrade, you end up with a system that feels like standard again.

To take away: the ten points we check before every upgrade, as a free checklist.

FAQ

Questions about Odoo 20

When was Odoo 20 released?

On 24 September 2026 at Odoo Experience in Brussels. On the same day, Odoo published the release notes and made version 20.0 available in the source code repository.

Do I have to switch to Odoo 20 right away?

No. What matters is which version you are using today: according to Odoo, standard support for Odoo 17 ended in September 2026, while it continues for 18 and 19. An upgrade belongs on a test copy, not in live operations.

Do the AI features cost extra?

Yes. According to the release notes, all AI features require credits purchased as in-app purchases. The amount depends on usage.

Can I connect ChatGPT, Claude or other AI tools to Odoo 20?

Yes, according to the release notes via MCP (Model Context Protocol). Check how access rights apply in detail on a test instance before using it in production.

What about e-invoicing and the German localisation?

Germany is not on the localisation list in the release notes. The e-invoicing features (Factur-X/ZUGFeRD, XRechnung, Peppol since Odoo 17) are still there – check on a test copy whether your configuration still works correctly after the upgrade.
